Medicare Advantage Plans
(Known as Part C)
A Medicare Advantage plan is a plan offered by a private company which offers all of the benefits of Original Medicare. Plans may offer some extra benefits that Original Medicare does not cover, such as vision, hearing and dental services. Most plans include Part D (prescription drug coverage).

Medicare Supplements
(Known as Medigap)
These policies are sold by private insurance companies and can help pay some of the costs not covered by Original Medicare. These do not cover long-term care, vision or dental services. They do not cover any prescription drug costs. A separate drug plan needs to be purchased.
Prescription Drug Plans (Part D)
A Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) helps pay for prescription drugs you need. It is not a requirement that you take a drug plan. However, it is strongly encouraged. If you decide not to get it when first eligible, and you do not have other creditable drug coverage (like employer coverage) or get Extra Help, you will pay a penalty later if you join a Prescription Drug Plan. That penalty will be paid as long as you have Medicare drug coverage. There are many Medicare Advantage plans that include prescription drug coverage.
